The Augmented Reality Workshop was the first collaboration initiative between the Royal Academy of Art (KABK) in The Hague and the Delft University of Technology (TU Delft). From March until June 2006, students from both institutes worked together on creating experimental, interactive 3D environments to be used in Augmented Reality projects in the fields of gaming, interior design and the fine arts. Some results of this workshop were presented during the official opening of the AR+RFID Lab on September 8, 2006.

Delft Universtity of Technology (TU Delft) has donated three middle size soccer robots to our AR+RFID Lab. The robots were taking part in the RoboCup finals in late 90's. Some of the pattern recognition technologies the robots use are similar to the ones applied in Augmented Reality headsets. Though partly incompatible with current computer devices, the soccer robots are still functional and ready to be programmed in C++ using integrated image processing libraries.

Our AR+RFID Lab is officially open. Jurjen Caarls from TU Delft prepared a demonstration of the Augmented Reality headset using 3D models and animations created in the workshop of Wim van Eck and Pawel Pokutycki. Volunteers from the audience could test our headset and experience Augmented Reality by playing a simple game demo with 3D asteroids. Jurjen Caarls (TU Delft) is preparing the demo. Wim van Eck and Jurjen Caarls are measuring the position of optical markers. The presentation attracted some students and teachers of the Royal Academy of Art (KABK), AR+RFID Lab partners and contributors. First volunteer trying the AR headset. Different elements of a multilayered photograph projected on a wall can be displayed or hidden using an interface made of tangible RFID-tagged objects and a table with an embedded RFID reader. But instead of simply "taking" pictures of these objects and presenting them on screen in a realistic way, the system projects their unexpected and sometimes surprising, symbolic interpretations in form of an imaginative, associative photomontage.
The installation was presented during the Open Day of the Royal Academy of Art (KABK) in The Hague in January 2006, to show prospective students what they can expect from the new full-time course Interactive Media Design, starting at the Academy in September 2006.
