Syntens, CLICK NL and the Amsterdam Economic Board organised their second seminar on transmedia storytelling on Thursday 31 October 2013 at the National Library of the Netherlands. This is an increasingly important topic for cultural heritage institutions as storytelling allows them to display collections differently or to utilize digital and interactive presentation techniques in order to attract a new visitors. At the same time, companies and researchers who are keen to work together with museums, for example, and who would like to test their research in a practical setting were also very welcome. The AR Lab showed some highlights of its projects. Keywords are collaboration, visibility and forging bonds with visitors. Take a look at the programme on Syntens’ website.

One of the AR Lab’s partners, Delft University of Technology (involving master student Tim Zaman and professors Pieter Jonker, Jo Geraerdts and Joris Dik) has developed a 3D-scanning method with which not only the image of a painting, but also its material surface can be scanned. As a result, is it possible to print out a picture that has many of the original painting’s qualities - equipment made by Océ, part of Canon, was used, amongst others, for this method. Tim Zaman used two camera’s and a projector to accurately scan paintings by Rembrandt and Van Gogh. This project received quite a lot of national and international media attention.

The Cultural Heritage Agency of the Netherlands (Rijksdienst voor Cultureel Erfgoed - RCE) invited us to develop an installation based on the painting 'Isaac Blessing Jacob' by Govert Flinck, on show at Museum Catharijneconvent in Utrecht. The installation will be opened on 16 May 2013. With the AR-installation our aim is to make technological research about art accessible for a broad audience. Building upon our work for the Van Gogh Museum, we wanted to create an installation which offers visitors to the museum a playful way to interact with this scientific data. In this project we are collaborating with Museum Catharijneconvent in Utrecht where the painting is on display, and the Cutural Heritage Agency.

The Media Technology MSc program of Leiden University stimulates students to view science with a creative outlook. Unexpected questions, unconventional research methods and output, like games installations, books: all this happens in the Media Technology program. Each year, students work in groups on a large project, the results of which are presented in a public exhibition – this year for the first time at the Raamsteeg 2 location in Leiden. This year’s theme is Transition. Are you curious what our society would look like when modelled on a beehive, how you can generate crowd-commitment for sustainable living, or how Dante inspires moral action? Come by and be surprised by the out-of-box thinking of Mediatechies! The exhibition and related events are in English. Free entry.
