For the second year in a row, one of the AR Lab’s projects – Smart Replicas this time – was nominated for a RAAK-Pro Award! This ceremony was held on 21 November 2013 and is part of Stichting Innovatie Alliantie (SIA) annual conference. Each year, prizes are awarded to those projects that take knowledge circulation, knowledge advancement, projects’ results and sustainable innovation to heart.

We are very proud to announce that we are nominated for a RAAK-Pro award 2013 for our highly collaborative (Studio Maaike Roozenburg, TU-Delft, KABK students from the Graphic Design department, Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen) Smart Replicas project! With this project, our aim is to reuse historical objects by 3D-printing them and enriching them with innovative techniques such as AR. KABK Students, all the while, learn how to adopt new techniques to further their artistic design research.
Design Column #4 The Circle Is Round features four stories that provide a counterweight to the current tendency towards withdrawal and defence. In different ways the projects show that thinking in terms of boundaries and linear developments is by no means always relevant. When doors appear to close, opportunities arise elsewhere. The ‘plastic soup’ in the ocean is not bound by national borders. Newer and bigger is not always better. Growth is cyclical; the circle is round.
On Friday 28 June 2013 from 17.30 till 19.00 hrs the Smart Replicas project will be presented at Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam. The first results of this highly collaborative project (including Studio Maaike Roozenburg, Delft University of Technology, the AR Lab and the Royal Academy of Art), are on display.
Graphic Design students at the KABK have completed a number of projects under Gert Dumbar's guidance for the Smart Replicas project. This project is a collaborative effort between Studio Maaike Roozenburg, Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, the AR Lab and Delft University of Technology.

From 25 October 2008 til 4 January 2009 Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam exhibited its wonderful collection of sgraffito objects from the period 1450-1550: Sgraffito in 3D. Sgraffito is an ancient decorative technique where patterns are scratched into wet clay. The Dutch plates, bowls and cooking pots are part of the Van Beuningen-De Vriese collection.
